3:59 am - welcome to your 20s
i don't feel needed or wanted in any general kind of way. nothings asked of me, certainly nothings required. my greatest task in life, apparently, is going to be figuring out what to do with myself in the first place. nothing in my education has prepared me for this. it's as if an identity where some sort of bequest my predecessors were meant to leave to me, like their failure to has left me less than living. so then there are these conflicting drives: to take the most difficult path, or to take the simplest. who i am seems to be such a function of what i can do that there isn't much room left for choice. it's like nothing was left up to me.

here i am.

i love proper homey french breakfast with a baguette and a big bowl of coffee with milk! this is definitely going to be part of my life from now on . . . as are rolling one's own cigarettes, tech-house parties (!), supping late and teeny little cups of espresso.

4:45 am - mission statement
I am not the person I know,
     or that she knows,
          or the person anybody knows

I am something different and
I am mutable,
like a chameleon.
There are shades of me.

   I have many colors.
I am a riddle with no punch line.
       The different mes
are as different as
        me being funny
               me buying marbles.

I am an odour and a
taste and a sound and
a tactile sensation.

I am organized biologically,

I am wrapped in an wool blanket stuffed with pulverized newspaper.
I am stuffed full of shit and goo.
My skin is a porous membrane of epithelial cells.
I breathe smoke and I spit green.

7:04 am - it goes on and on and on and on . . .
i've become extremely fond of sitting and staring into space. pure contemplation is vastly underrated. there are so many people in this little college place, and they're all so preoccupied. it's like a farce, if you just stop and look at it.

1:01 am - va senate race

well, probably not. there is a rumor that he had a confederate flag on the wall of his home once, and that he might have made a lynching related comment. however, he sponsored the Senate's official apology for failing to do anything about lynchics, and he's a leading fundraiser for the GOP 2008 nomination. so I don't think he's keeping stuff like that around
if your friend did see it, then it could be some staffer's. allen's dumb, but probably not that dumb

well, i mean as long as he's sorry

10:45 pm - oh, well
bye-bye to paris tommorrow, le sniff-sniff. i went to the pompidou today, which fucked my brain, of course. it was almost upsetting. actually parts of it were entirely upsetting, i got very upset. but then my dear dear servas host anne leroy made me this lovely sort of pork pot-au-feu - she stewed the pork with lovely aromatics (including celery hearts, which was new to me), made a soup with the stock and served the stewed pork with potatoes and cabbage seperately. i think she was trying to cook me something irish, actually - which is funny because irish people live on potatoes, water, and miracles, as far as i can tell.

2:39 pm - the journey continues
have arrived in la rochelle - it's desperately beautiful. meeting josè ibero in anjers at 7:00. had a lovely petit dejeuner; got chatted up by coked up swedes; had a baguette with lovely ham and even lovelier butter on it. i always forget how good the butter is here - and the coffee. it makes life so much more worth living. i suppose i'm lucky to be an american, though, just because the contrast makes it all so much more delicious.

7:05 pm - it takes fifteen to tango in my book
"you can't hold down these truths better than a bottle of wine
and you have diamonds for eyes tonight
and you stare at the ground
and you stare at the ground!
and i can push you up against a wall tonight
but what good would that do?
what good would that do?
and you shove it away . . ."

10:55 am - not smoking not smoking not smoking . . .
day two of cold turkey. harrumph. it's so difficult to remember why you quit. of course you know that you have to because you don't want cancer, but that's a 20-to-50 years from now issue, so it really is difficult to hold onto the idea of it. gary becker says that i have "addictive capital," that i add to it every day that i smoke and that i lose some of it every day that i don't. it does make it a little easier not to smoke knowing that not smoking is making further not smoking easier. it's always easier to get through something if you know that the worst is coming up front.

12:23 pm - wow i'm a dumb ass
so i was, you know, forcibly defrosting my refrigerator with a solid iron sculpture my friend steve singer made me entitled "power object" when i hit some kind of gas line and sprayed frion (or whatever the hell they use nowadays) ALL OVER MY FACE. i was bodily thrown backwards against the wall by the force of the rushing gas, knocking my bean against the wall with a satisfying thump.

i hope refrigerator repair men still exist because I just bought this thing like twenty minutes ago.

2:34 am - just, you know, some thoughts . . .
it's so interesting how many conventions you just don't notice in television or film. i was watching a television show where the lead character is lost somewhere . . . he figures out where west is based on the trajectory of the sun and then points to where north is from that, only it's clearly more than ninety degrees from west. i think the only reason he did it was that to point north he'd have to point at the camera, and you're not allowed to do that in that situation. they would have had to cut to a close up and they wanted to hold off on that for a while longer . . .

apparently stephen colbert did a triumphant celebration of zarqawi's death. it's such an odd triumph. we took out a major terrorist who wouldn't have existed if we hadn't have started a war in the first place. does not pass benefit/cost analysis, in my book.

you should click that colbert link, btw - it's him doing this insane dance while following a congressman.

note that i just juxtaposed reuters' assesment of the public reaction to zarqawi's death with a video of an american comedian dancing.
